Dr. Kao once again co-chaired APARRI’s annual conference at UC Berkeley. This year’s theme was Hope and Struggle: Navigating Today, Nurturing Tomorrow” and took place from June 9, 11, 2026.

We had a record number of submissions this year and an exciting program of a spoken word artist, Michelle “Mush” Lee who served as our keynote speaker, a series of concurrent panels, a mentoring luncheon, informal roundtable, and many comunal meals enjoyed together.

Above: Grace Kao and Libby Kao (no relation) leading the conference intros, including the fun icebreaker question: “if we were stranded on a deserted isle, what is a skill you could contribute to our collective survival (or entertainment)?

Below: Carolyn Chen thanking program committee members (Helen Jin Kim, Jane Hong, Grace Kao, Libby Kao, Jesse Lee, Kalpesh Bhatt and not pictured: Martin Nguyen) for their service.
